DeepSeek connection guide

Your DeepSeek setup,
at a glance.

MultipleChat includes a DeepSeek provider option. Use it with a key from your DeepSeek API account. The app loads available models so you can select a current chat model instead of relying on an old model name from a tutorial.

Your model choice

A direct connection to your DeepSeek account.

Choose DeepSeek in the app to use DeepSeek API billing directly. If you already access DeepSeek through OpenRouter, select OpenRouter instead and use that service's key. Keys and billing belong to the connection you choose.

Your API account

The right key for the connection.

A DeepSeek consumer chat account and API access have different usage arrangements. Check your API balance and key status. This guide uses the direct DeepSeek connection, not an OpenRouter key.

Local history. Cloud model.

This guide keeps your chat history on your computer, while the configured API processes requests in the cloud. Prompts and relevant document passages go through the connection shown above. To run inference on your own hardware, use a local model.

If your first conversation does not connect.

No models load

Check that the DeepSeek key is active and your computer can reach the API. Reopen the provider settings after saving the key.

An old model name fails

Choose a model returned by the current list. Providers can rename or retire models; the app's previous default may no longer be available.

An OpenRouter key is rejected

Use the OpenRouter provider option for an OpenRouter key. The direct DeepSeek provider requires a DeepSeek API key.

Provider references: DeepSeek API connection guide. Reviewed 24 October 2026. Model availability depends on your account and installed app release.

MultipleChat is an independent desktop app, not an official DeepSeek product. Provider and model names belong to their respective owners.

Getting started

Connect DeepSeek in four steps.

Have your DeepSeek API key and any required API credit ready before starting the 24-hour app trial.

Have your API key or local model ready before clicking Start trial. Your 24 hours begin at that point. A consumer AI subscription does not automatically include API credit.

  1. Install MultipleChat

Download for Mac or Windows and check the platform requirements. This is an independent desktop app with a separate license.

  2. Choose DeepSeek

Open Settings → AI Providers → LLM, select DeepSeek, and enter your DeepSeek API key in the app.

  3. Select your model

After entering your DeepSeek key, let Chat Model Selection load. Select an available model and save. Avoid copying an outdated model ID from a screenshot or older guide.

  4. Save and start chatting

Save the provider settings, create a workspace and send a short message. Check usage in DeepSeek after testing. Keep your API key private.

Before you download

Your questions, answered.

Is this the official DeepSeek desktop app?

No. MultipleChat is an independent desktop client with a DeepSeek API connection. It is not published by or affiliated with DeepSeek.

Does this download include a local DeepSeek model?

No. This guide connects to the cloud API. To run a compatible downloaded model locally, configure Ollama or LM Studio and check your computer's hardware requirements.

Do I need to enter the DeepSeek API base URL?

The built-in DeepSeek connection already configures its endpoint. Choose DeepSeek, enter your key and select an available model.

What does bring your own API key mean?

Create an API key with a supported provider and add it in Settings → AI Providers → LLM. The app connects directly to that provider using your key. API usage is billed to your provider account separately from the app license.

Where are my chats and API keys stored?

Your chat history, documents, local document index and API keys are stored on your computer. When you choose a cloud model, your prompt and any relevant document passages are sent to that provider under its terms. No MultipleChat server sits between your app and the model provider.

Can I use a local AI model instead of an API key?

Yes. Connect a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Local chat and document indexing can run on your computer without cloud API usage charges. Model performance depends on your hardware. A licensed copy needs an online check-in at least every 14 days; web search and cloud models also need an internet connection.

How much does the desktop app cost?

Try the app for 24 hours. The trial starts when you click Start trial, so prepare your API key or local model first. A license costs $250 as a one-time purchase. Cloud API usage is charged separately by your provider. Local models use your own hardware without per-token provider fees.

Does the desktop license include the web subscription?

No. MultipleChat AI Desktop is a separate, single-user product using your own API keys or local models. The web subscription and web-only features, including the Studios and AI Collaboration, are separate.

How do I activate my license?

Your license key is emailed to the address you use at checkout. Enter it under Settings → License. If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder or contact [email protected].
