Kimi connection guide

Your Kimi setup,
at a glance.

Select OpenRouter in the provider settings, then find Kimi models under Moonshot AI in the model list. This route uses your OpenRouter account and key, so it does not require signing into the Kimi consumer chat app.

Kimi is the model. OpenRouter is the connection.

Model lists may group Kimi under its developer, Moonshot AI, rather than the name Kimi alone. Choose a chat model that your OpenRouter account can access. Keep the first test simple before trying longer conversations or additional inputs.

Your API account

The right key for the connection.

Use an OpenRouter API key for this guide. A Moonshot API key belongs to a different provider connection. OpenRouter handles usage billing and routes requests to the selected model host.

New to this connection? Follow the OpenRouter desktop guide for the shared key, model list and billing setup.

Local history. Cloud model.

This guide keeps your chat history on your computer, while the configured API processes requests in the cloud. Prompts and relevant document passages go through the connection shown above. To run inference on your own hardware, use a local model.

If your first conversation does not connect.

You cannot find Kimi in the list

Look under Moonshot AI in the OpenRouter model groups. Model names and availability can change.

Your Moonshot key does not work

This guide uses the OpenRouter provider, which needs an OpenRouter API key. Do not mix keys between connections.

A large request fails

Reduce the message size and check the selected model's limits and your available API credit. A model's advertised capacity does not guarantee every app workflow supports it.

MultipleChat is an independent desktop app, not an official Kimi product. Provider and model names belong to their respective owners.

Getting started

Connect Kimi in four steps.

Have your OpenRouter API key and any required API credit ready before starting the 24-hour app trial.

Have your API key or local model ready before clicking Start trial. Your 24 hours begin at that point. A consumer AI subscription does not automatically include API credit.

  1. Install MultipleChat

Download for Mac or Windows and check the platform requirements. This is an independent desktop app with a separate license.

  2. Choose OpenRouter

Open Settings → AI Providers → LLM, select OpenRouter, and enter your OpenRouter API key in the app.

  3. Select your model

Open Chat Model Selection under OpenRouter. Find the Moonshot AI organization, choose an available Kimi chat model and save. Create a workspace for your first conversation.

  4. Save and start chatting

Save the provider settings, create a workspace and send a short message. Check usage in OpenRouter after testing. Keep your API key private.

Before you download

Your questions, answered.

Why does the guide say Moonshot AI?

Moonshot AI develops Kimi models. OpenRouter groups those models under Moonshot AI, while you select OpenRouter as the desktop app's provider.

Does it connect to my Kimi chat history?

No. Your OpenRouter API key connects model access, not your consumer Kimi chat account. Conversations started here are stored in MultipleChat.

Is this an official Kimi desktop app?

No. MultipleChat is an independent desktop client. This guide accesses Kimi models through OpenRouter.

What does bring your own API key mean?

Create an API key with a supported provider and add it in Settings → AI Providers → LLM. The app connects directly to that provider using your key. API usage is billed to your provider account separately from the app license.

Where are my chats and API keys stored?

Your chat history, documents, local document index and API keys are stored on your computer. When you choose a cloud model, your prompt and any relevant document passages are sent to that provider under its terms. No MultipleChat server sits between your app and the model provider.

Can I use a local AI model instead of an API key?

Yes. Connect a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Local chat and document indexing can run on your computer without cloud API usage charges. Model performance depends on your hardware. A licensed copy needs an online check-in at least every 14 days; web search and cloud models also need an internet connection.

How much does the desktop app cost?

Try the app for 24 hours. The trial starts when you click Start trial, so prepare your API key or local model first. A license costs $250 as a one-time purchase. Cloud API usage is charged separately by your provider. Local models use your own hardware without per-token provider fees.

Does the desktop license include the web subscription?

No. MultipleChat AI Desktop is a separate, single-user product using your own API keys or local models. The web subscription and web-only features, including the Studios and AI Collaboration, are separate.

How do I activate my license?

Your license key is emailed to the address you use at checkout. Enter it under Settings → License. If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder or contact [email protected].
