A Gemini API connection of your own.

Google AI Studio manages Gemini API keys and their associated projects. The key you use must permit Gemini API requests. This setup connects the API to MultipleChat; it does not sign you into the Gemini consumer app or import its history.

Your API account

The right key for the connection.

Check the key's project, API restrictions and quota in Google AI Studio. Available models, billing and regional access depend on your Google API account. The desktop trial does not supply Google API credit.

Local history. Cloud model.

This guide keeps your chat history on your computer, while the configured API processes requests in the cloud. Prompts and relevant document passages go through the connection shown above. To run inference on your own hardware, use a local model.

If your first conversation does not connect.

Google rejects the key

Check whether the key is blocked or restricted to a different API. Follow Google's current key guidance and use a key authorized for the Gemini API.

A model or region is unavailable

Verify that your project and location can access the selected model. Choose a supported model offered by the installed desktop app.

Requests hit a quota

Review the project's Gemini API quotas and billing setup. Usage limits belong to the Google API project, separately from your desktop license.

Provider references: Google's Gemini API key guide. Reviewed 24 October 2026. Model availability depends on your account and installed app release.

MultipleChat is an independent desktop app, not an official Gemini product. Provider and model names belong to their respective owners.

Getting started

Connect Gemini in four steps.

Have your Gemini API key and any required API credit ready before starting the 24-hour app trial.

Have your API key or local model ready before clicking Start trial. Your 24 hours begin at that point. A consumer AI subscription does not automatically include API credit.

  1. Install MultipleChat

Download for Mac or Windows and check the platform requirements. This is an independent desktop app with a separate license.

  2. Choose Gemini

Open Settings → AI Providers → LLM, select Gemini, and enter your Gemini API key in the app.

  3. Select your model

Choose a supported Gemini chat model in the app and save. Start a workspace and test a short text conversation before using additional model capabilities.

  4. Save and start chatting

Save the provider settings, create a workspace and send a short message. Check usage in Your Google API project after testing. Keep your API key private.

Before you download

Your questions, answered.

Can I use my Google login instead of a key?

This connection uses a Gemini API key. Signing into Google's consumer Gemini app does not configure the desktop app's API connection.

Where do I manage Gemini API permissions?

Manage the key and its associated Google project through Google AI Studio and the relevant Google Cloud settings. The key must permit requests to the Gemini API.

Is MultipleChat an official Google app?

No. MultipleChat is an independent desktop app that connects to Google's Gemini API using your own key.

What does bring your own API key mean?

Create an API key with a supported provider and add it in Settings → AI Providers → LLM. The app connects directly to that provider using your key. API usage is billed to your provider account separately from the app license.

Where are my chats and API keys stored?

Your chat history, documents, local document index and API keys are stored on your computer. When you choose a cloud model, your prompt and any relevant document passages are sent to that provider under its terms. No MultipleChat server sits between your app and the model provider.

Can I use a local AI model instead of an API key?

Yes. Connect a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Local chat and document indexing can run on your computer without cloud API usage charges. Model performance depends on your hardware. A licensed copy needs an online check-in at least every 14 days; web search and cloud models also need an internet connection.

How much does the desktop app cost?

Try the app for 24 hours. The trial starts when you click Start trial, so prepare your API key or local model first. A license costs $250 as a one-time purchase. Cloud API usage is charged separately by your provider. Local models use your own hardware without per-token provider fees.

Does the desktop license include the web subscription?

No. MultipleChat AI Desktop is a separate, single-user product using your own API keys or local models. The web subscription and web-only features, including the Studios and AI Collaboration, are separate.

How do I activate my license?

Your license key is emailed to the address you use at checkout. Enter it under Settings → License. If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder or contact [email protected].
