Qwen connection guide

Your Qwen setup,
at a glance.

This guide uses MultipleChat's OpenRouter connection. Select OpenRouter as the provider, enter your OpenRouter API key and look for a Qwen chat model in the model list. You do not enter a Qwen consumer login or an Alibaba Cloud key in this field.

Your model choice

Pick a chat model from the Qwen family.

Qwen is a model family, not a single model. The catalog can include models designed for different tasks. Select a text-chat model available through your account; an image-generation model is not interchangeable with a chat model.

Your API account

The right key for the connection.

This setup uses OpenRouter billing and routing. Your requests go to OpenRouter and the selected model host. A DashScope or Alibaba Cloud key is not an OpenRouter key.

New to this connection? Follow the OpenRouter desktop guide for the shared key, model list and billing setup.

Local history. Cloud model.

This guide keeps your chat history on your computer, while the configured API processes requests in the cloud. Prompts and relevant document passages go through the connection shown above. To run inference on your own hardware, use a local model.

Qwen is not shown as a provider

Select OpenRouter as the provider. Qwen is the model family to find inside its model list.

Your key fails

Check that it is an OpenRouter API key and that its credit or spending limit allows the request. Keys from Alibaba Cloud use a different connection.

The model rejects the request

Choose a Qwen text-chat model and test a plain message. Availability and supported inputs vary across the family.

MultipleChat is an independent desktop app, not an official Qwen product. Provider and model names belong to their respective owners.

Getting started

Connect Qwen in four steps.

Have your OpenRouter API key and any required API credit ready before starting the 24-hour app trial.

Have your API key or local model ready before clicking Start trial. Your 24 hours begin at that point. A consumer AI subscription does not automatically include API credit.

  1. Install MultipleChat

Download for Mac or Windows and check the platform requirements. This is an independent desktop app with a separate license.

  2. Choose OpenRouter

Open Settings → AI Providers → LLM, select OpenRouter, and enter your OpenRouter API key in the app.

  3. Select your model

In OpenRouter's Chat Model Selection, look under the Qwen organization. Select a chat model available to your account, save, and test with a short text message.

  4. Save and start chatting

Save the provider settings, create a workspace and send a short message. Check usage in OpenRouter after testing. Keep your API key private.

Before you download

Your questions, answered.

Which key do I need for this Qwen setup?

Use an OpenRouter API key. This guide connects Qwen through OpenRouter, not directly through Alibaba Cloud.

Does Qwen run locally in this setup?

No. This route uses cloud inference through OpenRouter. For a compatible Qwen model on your own computer, use a local runner and the local-AI setup guide instead.

Is MultipleChat an official Qwen app?

No. It is an independent desktop client. Qwen models are accessed through your configured OpenRouter account.

What does bring your own API key mean?

Create an API key with a supported provider and add it in Settings → AI Providers → LLM. The app connects directly to that provider using your key. API usage is billed to your provider account separately from the app license.

Where are my chats and API keys stored?

Your chat history, documents, local document index and API keys are stored on your computer. When you choose a cloud model, your prompt and any relevant document passages are sent to that provider under its terms. No MultipleChat server sits between your app and the model provider.

Can I use a local AI model instead of an API key?

Yes. Connect a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Local chat and document indexing can run on your computer without cloud API usage charges. Model performance depends on your hardware. A licensed copy needs an online check-in at least every 14 days; web search and cloud models also need an internet connection.

How much does the desktop app cost?

Try the app for 24 hours. The trial starts when you click Start trial, so prepare your API key or local model first. A license costs $250 as a one-time purchase. Cloud API usage is charged separately by your provider. Local models use your own hardware without per-token provider fees.

Does the desktop license include the web subscription?

No. MultipleChat AI Desktop is a separate, single-user product using your own API keys or local models. The web subscription and web-only features, including the Studios and AI Collaboration, are separate.

How do I activate my license?

Your license key is emailed to the address you use at checkout. Enter it under Settings → License. If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder or contact [email protected].
